Mum Smokes

On a cool autumn day in 2003 in an old house in a lazy street in Melbourne, almost fifty years after the world first embraced the idea of an all male guitar, bass, drums and vocal combo, Mum Smokes began to jam out its first songs. Since then, irregular musical workouts, soul searching and weekend recording bouts squeezed into a room of peeling floral wallpaper and faded rainbow carpet, with the intermittent waft of cat piss and the frantic scurrying of rodents in the walls, have given shape to a mess of influences and dreams in rustic urban pop songs that are warm, timeless, melodic and strange. Mum Smokes' sound combines an appreciation for classic 60s pop melody, restless experimentalism, personal lyrical perspective and the DIY ethic of punks and home improvers. The band is soon to release a follow up to its 2005 debut album, "Rainbows, Chasms and Fantasies".
