’I saw The Liftmen in that crazy oversized silver arena gazebo type structure at Ashton Court festival the summer just, and lapped it up, no fuss. They patiently glid’ through an array of groove laden rock tunes all charming and articulate with bright obscure and then direct lyricism, often with a back to nature feel, maybe it was the wellingtons. They sing, harmonise and dish out twisty, fuzzy riffs with immediate hooks. Some of it reminded me of a funky Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci, some of it feels more jammed, cooler even, but all with a self assured modesty and style everyone including the newts dig. A proper fresh and locally sourced accompaniment’

’the smaller guitar/bass/drums line up suits them, though, giving the irrepressible Neil Smith the chance to play guitar for two, thrashing increasingly frenzied chord solos at every opportunity between Rasha Shaheen’s twinkling vocals, unimpressed by her everyday lyrics that fit so neatly. Again there’s an early 80’s feel if the Au Pairs or Pere Ubu meeting the later Captain Beefheart and suddenly I remember why I used to like rock music so much. This is what ’indie’ use dto mean - independent imagined and produced music full of the personality of the players, not an interchangable swamp of formulation. The Liftmen ’Have it’ in bucket loads.
