The seeds for Anticon co-founder Why?’s musical career were sown when Jonathan ‘Yoni’ Wolf stumbled across an old 4-track in the basement of his father’s synagogue. Much solo musical experimenting ensued as Yoni combined rapping, drumming and poetry to produce a fresh brand of folk-pop indie-hop that has since come to define the Why? sound, best evidenced on the debut album ‘Oaklandazulasylum’. Why?’s history is one pitted with many collaborations, perhaps most notable being those with label-mates Doseone and Odd Nosdam under the guise of cLOUDEAD. The 2005 released ‘Elephant Eyelash’ saw Why?’s sound expand to a that of a full band with Yoni enlisting the talents of brother Josiah Wolf on drums, Matt Meldon on guitar and Doug McDiarmid doing all other parts from piano to harmonica. The results are a critically lauded collection of beautiful and awkward thickly layered songs underpinned by Yoni’s trademark candytime dissonant vocals and emotion laden symbolism. In addition to two full length albums Why? has a string of E.Ps, a number of singles and a handful of limited edition CD-Rs and now perform as a three piece.
