Portal is Alexander Tucker's third album for the ATP imprint, continuing in the British songwriter/producer's pursuit of balancing the old-fashioned disciplines of folk music with the experimentalism of drone and dissonance. The opening cut 'Poltergeists Grazing' suggests a creative alignment with Voice Of The Seven Woods, the most obvious contemporary of Tucker. Both artists share a preoccupation with fuzzy psych guitar and fingerpicked acoustic patterns, although Portal accommodates a far more pronounced interest in avant-garde studio techniques, with some great string treatments on 'Bell Jars' and 'Energy For Dead Plants'. As a writer, Tucker is on great form, concocting pieces like 'Veins To The Sky', which brings to mind a combination of Arthur Russell, The Beta Band and Six Organs Of Admittance, but it's the marriage of compositional and production disciplines that sets him apart from his peers. Excellent stuff.
