Fuck Buttons - Street Horrrsing
Jim Merrett
Post-rock goes postal
"At moments, it harnesses the power to kill conversation dead, like loudly announcing at a dinner party that you once slept with a model – after she’d been stabbed seven times."
What begins and ends like a set of wind chimes fitted with a self-destruct mechanism is enough to have some long redundant proto human pulling its hair out by the second track. ‘Street Horrrsing’ is like the monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey. Only it skips teaching apes to hit each other with bones and moves swiftly on to advanced beard-stroking. The primitive collides with the post-rock of a brand new digital tomorrow and somebody forgot to bring the tunes.Either this is about hitting the spot or Bristol duo Andrew Hung and Benjamin John Power are big fans of zips. Now, as we all know, swearing is fucking big and clever. It’s 2008, and just because they can’t say your name on air doesn’t mean you can’t get on the Xfm playlist. But cataclysmic 10 minute long barrages of sheer noise won’t help. Then again, given that this ATP signing currently tops most lists of bands to name-drop right now, we’re not sure they care.
What ‘Street Horrrsing’ often lacks in melody it makes up for in blunt atmosphere. At moments, it harnesses the power to kill conversation dead, like loudly announcing at a dinner party that you once slept with a model – after she’d been stabbed seven times. Use that power how you will.
‘Bright Tomorrow’ is aptly as promising as this gets in terms of songcraft, where soaring quasi-religious keyboards sound even more tender following the beating you’ve already received.
As the end of the world as we know it goes, sadly grown ups believing in fairytales about this God fella is more likely to usher our species closer to annihilation than this nihilistic hubbub. But on this evidence, what sounds like banging your head against a brick wall is not entirely fruitless.
