Fuck Buttons
Street Horrrsing
By Chris Whibbs

Despite an amalgamation of noise, electronic and indie, and the threat of failing at each, this Bristol, UK duo have mystified all and actually created something that satisfies and is entirely unique and stunning in the process. With six songs, and only one below the seven-minute mark, Fuck Buttons aren’t afraid to let a song breathe, and that’s exactly the way it should be. “Sweet Love for Planet Earth” uses cascading tones of feedback and twinkling dabs of what could be piano to set the mood for some throat-shredding vocals that actually add to the trance-inducing nature of the piece. “Ribs Out” throws in some tribal, Animal Collective-esque beats and samples to the noise mix, leaving the real experimental stuff to “Race You to the Bedroom — Spirit Rise,” which does tax the patience but, in true noise fashion, transports after a while with its fuzz, shouts and general chaos. Yet, scraping away the heavy industrial feel, demonstrated on standout “Bright Tomorrow,” Fuck Buttons are just really having fun while trying to blow your mind. Think of it as the most intelligent horrrsing around in music today. (ATP/R)

Cursed, on stage, take musical intimidation to a new level. The pulsing of their punk/metal hybrid disrupts heart rates and pushes bowels to the brink of release without warning. Singer Chris Colohan flails about with fiery eyes, neck veins bulging to the point of bursting. Bassist Dan Dunham shakes the foundations of the building, and while guitarist Christian McMaster’s feet are firmly planted, his head flails about like an Exorcist outtake, all while Mike Maxymuik pounds his drums like he caught them cheating. The sonic intensity... Read More
Sleepy political cartoons that hibernate on a newspaper’s editorial page were long overdue for a shake-up. And comics journalism, a coupling of reportage on real events with comic illustration, could bring about such a paradigm shift. Comic books are increasingly home to hard news reporting that challenge newspapers’ daily fix, sucking readers in with lush visuals.... Read More
