Pitchfork harvests more acts for ‘08 festival
Posted in Pitchfork Music Fest 2008, Music by Brent DiCrescenzo on March 28th, 2008Two weeks after announcing the first wave of acts for its third annual summer festival, to be held July 18–20, Pitchfork revealed thirteen more legends and wanna-bes today, promising it’s just the tip of the iceberg. Though perhaps that’s the wrong metaphor for a 90+ degrees outdoor concert.
The fresh crop:
Dinosaur Jr
Mission of Burma
Jarvis Cocker
Ghostface & Raekwon
The Apples in Stereo
Jay Reatard
Ruby Suns
Dirty Projectors
Cut Copy
A Hawk and A Hacksaw
Fuck Buttons
King Khan & the Shrines
Occidental Brothers Dance Band International
Mission of Burma, now the first band to perform at two Pitchfork Festivals, will rip through its 1982 album Vs. as part of Friday night’s Don’t Look Back event, along with Public Enemy and one TBA act. Seems a bit strange to me, to be honest, considering the only song most people wanna hear, "That’s When I Reach for My Revolver," came off the seminal ‘81 EP, Signals, Calls and Marches. Yeah yeah, it’s only six songs long, but it’s the record that matters.
I’m giddy over Jarvis Cocker’s surprise appearance. The former Pulp front man only performed four American dates to support his brilliant 2007 solo debut, Jarvis. The lanky wit premiered new tunes at recent South American gigs, and I hope for the same in Chicago.
As suspected, the Afrobeat invasion continues with the addition of Occidental Brothers Dance Band, though these locals purists are no trendy dabblers (*ahem* Ruby Suns). King Khan and Jay Reatard’s retro garage sounds stand above so many similar cavestompers, because the boys bring more hooks than Kareem.
And we all know nothing excites like two dudes standing at a picnic table over two laptops, screaming into Fisher Price mikes. Have no fear, Fuck Buttons push the right, uh, fuck buttons. And, man, just imagine the possibilities for collaborative jamming! We could see the world’s first ever Dirty Ghostface Reatard Dinosaur Fuck In Stereo.
The full slate is up at the P4K08 site.
