Mini interview with Buke & Gase (playing both ATPs this December)

Wednesday 14th November, 2012

Hometown: Originated in Brooklyn, currently in Hudson, NY.

Year Formed: 2007

Bio: BUKE AND GASE are Brooklyn-based two-piece Arone Dyer on the "buke" (a self-modified sixstring baritone ukulele) and Aron Sanchez on the "gas" (a guitar-bass hybrid of his own creation). Both of them play double duty mobilizing a small army of foot percussion. These instruments are then filtered through various pedals, amplifiers and other homemade inventions to create a surprisingly complex sound. Arone's supermelodic vocal lines weave through the beautiful yet sometimes unwieldy musical matter, balancing light and dark, calamity and control.

Their musical multi-tasking makes for live performances that are both visually unexpected and sonically explosive. They self-released an EP titled and in 2010 Brassland released their debut album Riposte. Stereogum's Brandon Stosuy says of the band, "You hear Beth Ditto for a second (one who races/fixes bikes and builds her own instruments, doesn't hang out at fashion shows), Kathleen Hannah in those Bikini Kill days, Throwing Muses, something else, etc., an overall joy."

Following their recent EP Functions Falls, the band will have a new album out on Brassland in February.

Do your best to describe the sound of your band in one sentence:

Agile Candyland thievery.

What are the most recent activities of your band?

We've just completed our album to be released in Jan 2013, as well as a post-pre-album EP that has just been released titled "Function Falls", are currently working on 2 videos to be released shortly... and we go swimming a lot.

How excited are you to play the events?

Which of your releases do you feel ATP attendees should check out first?

If they have the energy and interest, start from the beginning. Otherwise, the three original tunes on Function Falls are the most recent and perhaps represent us best at this time, at least until the LP comes out.

Are there any other currently confirmed bands you're excited about seeing?

Excited and hoping to see ALL of them, especially the bands we've never heard of. It's an mind-expanding and educational opportunity.

If you were curating, name three bands you'd want to play your event...

James Brown
Captain Beefheart

In Heaven, of course.

thank you!

Buke & Gase play both of the ATP festivals happening this winter in the UK - the weekend curated by The National is sold out, but there are limited tickets now back available for the Shellac curated weekend running the weekend of November 30th. More info those here.
