French Toast

Jerry Busher and James Canty have been friends for almost twenty years, and musical collaborators for five. The list of D.C bands they have been involved in runs far and deep, including but not exclusive to, Nation of Ulysses, Make Up, Fidelity Jones, All Scars, Las Mordidas, and Fugazi (Busher toured with the band for 8 years, and plays on "The Argument" and "Furniture"). It was with the All Scars that Busher and Canty first collaborated and decided to form a band together. French Toast has had two releases prior to working with Dischord; The Bugman E.P., a 6-song CD showcasing mostly the stripped-down guitar and drums songs they were doing around 2001, and a single CD ("Hatred Mace"/"For Sylvia") a year later. "In A Cave" is the first French Toast full-length release. Written over two years in the band's basement studio (The Cave), these 12 songs find the band exploring new terrain, instrumentally and conceptually, while holding on to the initial propulsion that launched them. Live and on this recording James and Jerry often trade off instruments and roles. On one track you will find Jerry on bass and vocals, while James rediscovers the drums, flip to the next track and you'll find a Busher-programmed electronic beat handling the rhythm, while the duo trades off vocals, keys, and random noise. The band has toured extensively in both the USA and Europe and in October 2005 the duo was expanded to a trio with the addition of Ben Gilligan.
