Richard James

Richard James was co-founder of seminal band Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, and has since produced an E.P. and four solo albums.

Along with writer John Williams, he leads on In Chapters - an arts-collective that stages multi-media events in Cardiff and at festivals, and is Curator of Music for the celebrated Laugharne Weekend Festival.

James has written for television (gaining a Bafta Cymru nomination for his work on S4C series 'Cara Fi' in 2015), live performance art projects, and composed an original soundtrack for a commission based on the work of Dylan Thomas (with artist Anthony Shapland) and co-wrote and performed the music written for two Yuri Norstein animations. He recently put together two 90 minute programmes for London based art radio station Resonance FM, containing a mixture of composed works, collaborations, field recordings and sonic art.
Richard was recently commissioned by Cardiff Contemporary to create two works of sound art in collaboration with Robin Edwards aka R.Seiliog; a performance and daily installation at Cardiff castle clock tower entitled In Place of Fear, and a pre-recorded piece to accompany the train journey from Queen St to Bute St stations.

He has recently completed a six month weekly live residency with composer and musician Angharad van Rijswijk under the name Locus at the Wales Millennium Centre, comprising 22 performances and 21 recordings totaling ten and a half hours of music, and each performance was broadcast weekly on Resonance FM.
Richard has produced five works of sound collage for radio from field recordings and original composed works; India Sound Collage for Resonance FM in 2014, and four pieces for Radio Cymru - Greek Sound Collage and three pieces capturing the Autumn and Winter seasons in Cardiff called Hydref/Gaeaf, all in 2015.

He is also developing a musical for NTW on the life of DR. William Price, a film on the mirologi music of Epirus in northern Greece, with numerous other projects in the pipeline.

He has traveled widely and recently led successful projects in Sudan and Australia for the British Council, Wales Arts International and Melbourne Writer's Festival. Richard was recently signed by London based label The State51 Conspiracy, who are re-releasing All The New Highways, and Richard is also working on a new album to be released by the label.
