THEY LIVE (1988. Dir John Carpenter) John Nada (Piper) is a struggling labourer who drifts into town and luckily scores a job at a construction site. Discovering a box of sunglasses, Nada swipes a pair and is shocked to find what he can see through them; billboards demand citizens 'Eat' or 'Sleep', TV shows spout orders at him and some people look rather less than human... John Carpenter, Rowdy Roddy Piper, Aliens, OBEY, Subliminal Messaging, overly-long punch-ups... They Live has it all, and then some. We've screened this film at THE Prince Charles Cinema a couple of times and every time it draws the best audience, but is seemingly ignored by even the most ardent of Carpenter supporters. But we'll continue to champion They Live for as long as the doors to the PCC are open. We feel it deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as the rest of John Carpenters work AND once you've WATCHed it, you'll know why. It's simply amazing and best served with a crowd so be sure not to miss THEY LIVE! |

THE MONSTER SQUAD (1987. Dir Fred Dekker) Count Dracula adjourns to Earth, accompanied by Frankenstein's Monster, the Wolfman, the Mummy, and the Gillman. The uglies are in search of a powerful amulet that will grant them power to rule the world. Our heroes - the Monster Squad are the only ones daring to stand in their way. Last year we set up a new 'REintroducing...' incentive, wherein we would set out to find those lost films of our youth which are no longer available to screen due to dissolving distributors, rights lapsing or even just lost 35mm prints. We had a 'Wish List' of titles we wanted to bring back and top of that list was THE MONSTER SQUAD. It took us the better part of 18 months, but after a world- wide search and countless phone-calls, emails and even faxes, in December of last year a 35mm print arrived at our building and we were proud to 'REintroduce...' The Monster Squad to a Sold Out UK audience. This film has now become part of the PCC's history and we couldn't programme a line-up without it. |

SE7EN (1985. Dir David Fincher) Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman star in this sinister and gripping mystery-thriller about a pair of homicide detectives who must solve a puzzling series of horrific murders based on the seven deadly sins - Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Pride, Lust, Envy and Wrath. Other than film, my biggest passion is music. Before being asked to curate this evenings cinematic entertainment I was already planning to attend I'LL BE YOUR MIRROR and take in my 7th Slayer show (a bit off topic, but I once dislocated my shoulder during their set at the old Astoria way back when), but as soon as ATP graciously invited me to pick some films I knew SE7EN had to be there... why? Well, when you're as big a fan of Slayer as I am, for no reason at all you know that SE7EN is Kerry King's favourite film and he is not a man you want to disappoint so it had to make the line-up. |

THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (1974. Dir Tobe Hooper) First released to a shocked public in 1974, Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is a terrifyingly dark tale, based (very loosely) on factual events. This controversial, brilliantly atmospheric, occasionally darkly funny film tells of the tragedy that befalls a group of five teenagers one summer afternoon. A blueprint for a generation of film-makers and undiminished by time, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is one of the purest horror movies ever made. As with SE7EN, an inherent knowledge of all things SLAYER has influenced this pick too. Tom Araya's fascination with serial killers led to his discovery of famed human skin-wearer, ED GEIN. And it just so happens that Ed Gein was the inspiration for Seasons In The Abyss track 'DEAD SKIN MASK' as well as TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE, making this the perfect connection between band and film. |

ALL TOMORROW'S PARTIES (2009. Dir All Tomorrow's People) SCREENING CURATED BY ATP In an out-of-season holiday camp on the coast of England, cult music festival All Tomorrow's Parties serves up a heady combination of alternative music, crazy golf and chalet-living; all curated by a single band or artist. This post-punk DIY bricolage uses material generated by the fans and musicians themselves, on a multitude of formats including Super8, camcorder and mobile phone material, over the history of the festival, to capture the uncompromising spirit of a parallel music universe. |

THE MEANING OF STYLE (2011. Dir Phil Collins) - on loop The British artist Phil Collins explores the construction of identity, particularly in relation to the video or television camera. Reflecting his own experiences growing up in northern England in the 1970s and 1980s, his works often use music, television and pop culture to explore social situations and transcend definitions of language, social status and locality. The meaning of style is a short film made with a group of young Malay skinheads in Penang. The skinhead subculture first emerged in Malaysia in the early 1990s, and Collins was intrigued by the translation of an English working-class subculture into a South- East Asian context, finding connections to aspects of Malaysia's British colonial history and complex racial politics. The work follows no clear narrative, taking the form of a dreamlike five-minute pop music video, set to a specially created soundtrack by Welsh musicians Gruff Rhys and Y Niwl. Its spare yet visually striking scenes focus on the role of style within the skinhead subculture, including two boys primping each other's clothes, a street fight and a girl lighting a cigarette. In the central scene, one skinhead opens a box of butterflies that alight on the heads and shoulders of the other boys, creating a visual allegory of youth's desire for flamboyant display. |

THE LIVES OF OTHERS (2006. Dir Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck) East Berlin, November 1984. Five years before its downfall, the former East-German government ensured its claim to power with a ruthless system of control and surveillance. Party-loyalist Captain Gerd Wiesler hopes to boost his career when given the job of collecting evidence against the playwright Georg Dreyman and his girlfriend, the celebrated theatre actress Christa-Maria Sieland. The immersion in the lives of others - in love, literature, free thinking and speech - makes Wiesler acutely aware of the meagerness of his own existence and opens to him a completely new way of life which he has ever more trouble resisting. But the system, once started, cannot be stopped. A dangerous game has begun. |

REC (2007. Dir Jaume Balaguero & Paco Plaza) A team of local TV reporters are following a squad of firemen on night duty. The footage is completely live and their task is to make a show about on the life of these professionals who work while we are sleeping. The first job of the night is to rescue an old lady who is trapped inside her apartment but the routine rescue soon takes a sinister turn. Something evil is spreading throughout the building, out of control. |

From these two strands of faith, author William Peter Blatty and director William Friedkin wove The Exorcist, the frightening and realistic story of an innocent girl inhabited by a malevolent entity. The Exorcist remains, 25 years later, one of the most shocking and gripping movies ever made. |

Louis Theroux is a BBC television presenter best known for making documentaries that investigate fascinating worlds and lifestyles. Over more than fifteen years, using a gentle questioning style and an informal approach, he has shone light on some of the world's most intriguing beliefs, behaviours, and institutions by getting to know the people at the heart of them - from the officers and inmates at San Quentin prison to the extreme believers of the Westboro Baptist Church; the male porn performers of the San Fernando Valley to the medical regime in one of America's leading centres of mental health for kids.
Recently he made a two-part series on Miami county jail and a special on America's private menageries of exotic animals. In the course of his career, Louis has scored a number of journalistic scoops. His series of celebrity profiles, When Louis Met..., took viewers inside the world of the charity fund-raising eccentric Sir Jimmy Savile; the media guru Max Clifford and his client Simon Cowell; and most famously Neil and Christine Hamilton, who found themselves the subject of rape allegations during filming and allowed Louis and his director to continue to stay with them and document the ensuing media onslaught. Louis graduated from Oxford in 1991 and started out as a print journalist the following year, working for Metro weekly in San Jose and then in New York for Spy magazine. He got his television break from Michael Moore, who hired him as a writer and correspondent for his ground-breaking satirical show, TV Nation.
In 1995 the BBC signed Louis to a development deal. He came up with an idea for a documentary series that would follow him as he immersed himself in off-beat lifestyle, called Weird Weekends. Over the years, Louis has kept true to a way of working that is uniquely his own: by charming his subjects, he's able to offer rounded portraits of some of the world's most psychologically gripping issues, while always resisting easy judgements. Louis has won two BAFTAs, an RTS award, and a Bulldog award, not to mention numerous nominations. Louis also continues to write for print publications. In 2005 he published a travel book about a few of his adventures, The Call of the Weird. He lives in West London with his girlfriend and two children.

What is this film called Love? (sneak preview) (2012. Dir Mark Cousins) SPECIAL SNEAK PREVIEW SCREENING CURATED BY ATP Sneak preview of a work in progress. After the success of the landmark film 'The Story of Film - An Odyssey' and his first feature, 'The First Movie', Mark Cousins' third feature documentary, 'What is this film called Love?' is a passionate, 78 minute poetic documentary about the nature of happiness. Written, directed and shot by Mark Cousins in Mexico, US, Canada, Germany and the UK, the film is currently in post production and will be available later this year. 'What is this film called Love?' was made in an almost unique way for a film: it had no script, crew, schedule and almost no equipment. It calls itself "an ad lib" and, indeed, it is made more like a piece of music. A poetic road movie, it's about a guy, filmmaker Mark Cousins, in a city alone, getting drunk, walking, dreaming. Featuring new music by PJ Harvey and brilliant modernist tracks from Soundescape by Simon Fisher Turner and Espen J. Joergensen, this is a sneak preview of this stunning, visually poetic, nakedly personal, cinematic, musical film.... Mark Cousins will introduce the film and give a short Q&A following. |

STALKING PETE DOHERTY (2005. Dir Max Carlish, Carey Dunn) Max Carlish is a British documentary filmmaker and former lecturer in media studies, was born to Jewish parents in the city of Birmingham. He is most famous, however, for his attempts to produce a so-called rockumentary about Pete Doherty, singer and guitarist with The Libertines and Babyshambles. Doherty was charged with assault and blackmail of the filmmaker after Carlish sold photographs of Doherty taking heroin to Sunday newspapers. |

KING OF KONG (2007. Dir Seth Gordon) In 2003, 35 year old family man Steve Wiebe, after losing his job at Boeing, found solace in Donkey Kong. Steve stumbled upon the world record score of 874,300 points set by Billy Mitchell who had appeared in 1982 Life Magazine as one of the worlds greatest gamers and he set out to break it. He began perfecting his game every night after his wife and kids went to bed, and not only surpassed Billys record, but ended up with a thought-to-be-impossible 1,000,000 points. A tidal wave of media coverage followed, and Steve Wiebe quickly became a celebrity in his hometown of Seattle, WA. He also rediscovered his love for teaching, and regained the respect of all who once doubted him. Meanwhile, back in Hollywood, FL, Billy Mitchell hatched a plan to reclaim his fallen Donkey Kong record... |
