The Matchbook Seeks Maniac single flaunts paintings by Scottish artist David Shrigley, who also painted Friend Opportunity's covers. It pairs "Matchbook Seeks Maniac" remixed for the end credits of the movie, Dedication, directed by Justin Theroux with the Japanese-lyric'd "Makko Shobu", about a pair of sperm whales in love, previously available only in the US as an iTunes bonus track. Both songs display Deerhoof's occasional sweet tooth for hymn-like, organ-centered pop with a harmonic sophistication seemingly meant to impress both Brian Wilson and Igor Stravinsky.
